Default Analog and Digital Cell Signal Basics

Analog, an older technology, translates an audio or visual signal into electronic pulses. Analog signals provide a richer sound quality at a lower cost. Analog generally has a larger coverage area, which can be especially important while roaming.

Digital converts the signal into a series of 0's and 1's during transmission and then converts the data back to its original form once it reaches the destination (for example, a cell phone or TV). Digital signals are often clearer while allowing a greater amount of information to be sent. Digital coverage areas allow more people to use their phones in a single coverage area because more data can be transmitted by each customer and signals are less prone to static and fade.
