Bit rate/compression for HD?
Hello everyone. I searched the forum before posting, but I'm brand new here and apologize if this has been addressed before. I was watching a high def program last night (something about man eating tigers?!) that appears to be recorded in HD, rather than upconverted standard definition programming. In slow scenes the picture was absolutely stunning, but fast action or panned scenes had horrid pixelation problems. I don't have scaling issues (34" 1080i CRT) and I have the H20 receiver. I haven't had the opportunity to watch much OTA HD yet, but I'm concerned about aggressive compression on the HD signals. Thoughts? Thanks!

I have DirecTV's HD access package. I believe the program was on Discovery HD. I hope to find a program on my OTA feed that I can compare to the DBS feed from DirecTV. My new antenna rotator shows up today, so I'll have a few more local HD channels to compare.

What you are describing sounds like video Judder, which is also called telecine judder. It's basically a "hickup" that happens from the 3:2 pulldown.
It could also be from too much compression on DTV's side, or low signal. I have seen this type of distortion on clear day with DTV's HD signal, but not that often. -Mike

I Have Also Seen This Video On Local Hd Ota & Discovery Hd And It Looks Like The Original Hd Camera Issue With This "older" Video. Also, As This Ota Station Now Broadcasts Two Side Channels, It's Hd Channel Has Gotten Worse W/ Compression Artifacts. Action, Fast Moving Water & The Blowing Fields Of Grasses Also Show Much "pixelation" In This Same Show. Look Into Planet Earth Series To See New Hd Camera Action... Much Better!
