Terk Tv38

I recently installed a Terk tv38 antenna to replace the one I had been using with hopes of getting better reception. But when I did the reception was much worse than what I had. So I bought a philips 29db preamp from walmart and it is no better. So I reintalled my old one, which I don't know what brand it is ,but it has a amplifier on it and I installed a signal booster on the cable run and I could recieve atlanta broadcasts and a few of the digital ones on a good day. Where did I go wrong? I live about 65 miles from atlanta.
